Newsgroups: rec.scouting From: mark@ccl-uk.demon.co.uk (Kevin Nutt) Subject: Gang Show Date: Fri, 3 Feb 1995 14:00:04 +0000 Lines: 78 Well, it's Gang Show time this week end in our village. We have a joint gang show with the local Guide group every two years. So far we've had a real blast getting ready for it. We have three performances in all, each lasting about two and a half hours. Having scratched our heads for a while to come up with some gags I thought I'd share some of our ideas with you. We have retained some of the 'standard' gang show material on the basis that it works just fine and is 'traditional' (Crest of a wave et al.) One sketch that we came up with (I haven't seen it anywhere else - but apologies if you've heard of it before) goes as folows ; The Main Event -------------- This a boxing match spoof. You need about 5 people in all, One Boxing Ref, two Trainers and two Boxers. You can adapt the outline to suit local taste I'm sure. Equipment needed - Boxing Ring !! - we used 3 chairs with ropes to form a half square triangle. Audience looks diagonally across the 'square'. Cassette tapes with 'Eye of the tiger' (Rocky theme) and a children's song tape (we used 'Puff the magic dragon' ) Step ladder, chair,Hair dryer, dressing mirror, hairbrush, teddy bear .... Curtain opens to ref. standing in the ring. He makes the announcement concerning the "main event of the evening. A heavyweight bout starring two local boxers .... Introducing the contender, weighing in at 220 pounds and twenty pence (only works in the UK ) from ............ in the Blue corner 'Frank - know what I mean 'Arry - Uno" (Frank Bruno is an English Boxer with the catchphrase 'know what I mean Harry' The childrens tape is played (boxers usually have some macho stuff playing) as the intro music and the first boxer makes his entrance down centre aisle in the audience. He's scared stiff, tries to run off but his trainer won't let him, clutching his teddy ...... Won't vault the rope so trainer fetches step ladder - you get the idea. Trainer sets out chair, mirror, brushes his hair ... Ref: " and in the red corner the defending champ from ........ Chris Sandbank" (Chris Ewbank is an English boxer who evryone loves to hate. He loves to pose for the crowd and frequently stops boxing just to strut around the ring. The rocky tape is played and get the audience boo-ing and hissing. He eventually tries to vault the rope and falls flat on his face. There then follows as much spoof boxing, Frank Uno running off and pushed back in by the trainer/ref as you can dream up. Chris Sandbank does lots of strutting and posing - ham it up plenty. The 'fight' ends as Chris Sandbank charges at Frank Uno, knocks him down and flies off stage with momentum (big crash at this point) and both boxers lie in a heap. Ref counts : "One ... Two .... Three ... - oh forget it!" trainers run on with buckets of 'water' which they aim at the boxers and throw into the audience. END We've been doubled up laughing at this one. You'll probably want to adapt the characters names. One of the main laughs is the strutting/posing that goes on. I'll let you know on Monday how the GS goes.
