SEND IT! ----------------------------------------- "Hello Danny, I posted a great song collection to rec.scouting, so why didn't it show up in your archives?" Well, let's face it. I'm not reading all articles posted on rec.scouting nor am I archiving everything that is being said on this newsgroup (short of terabytes of disk space). So if you write or post a list of hints or another distilled contribution and would like to keep it for posteriority, please E-mail me a copy, or upload it to the directory rec.scouting/incoming/ on ftp.ethz.ch and E-mail me a note telling me to get it. Also note that my archives are specializing on text files with a high content density. Scouting-related clip-art and pictures should be uploaded to a host welcoming these file types, such as ftp.imp.ch or pluto.utdallas.edu (when it is up again). ACCESSING THE ARCHIVES ---------------------- You can access the ftp.ethz.ch archive through one of the following methods: 1. WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW) Use one of the URLs gopher://gopher.ethz.ch:1070/11/rec.scouting/ or ftp://ftp.ethz.ch/rec.scouting/ The gopher URL is a bit faster, but isn't guaranteed to exist forever. 2. ANONYMOUS FTP ftp to ftp.ethz.ch. login as 'anonymous' and use your full E-mail address as password. The archive is located in the directory 'rec.scouting'. 3. GOPHER Gopher to gopher.ethz.ch. You'll find the archive under the menu entry 'FTP Archive on ftp.ethz.ch/'. 4. E-MAIL There are a number of WWW-to-E-mail and FTP-to-E-mail gateways that will pick a directory listing or a web page for you. I tried a few, and the easiest to use in my opinion is Agora, a WWW-to-E-mail gateway based at CERN in Geneva, the birthplace of the Web. To get started with Agora, send a mail to agora@mail.w3.org containing the following lines in the message body: HELP SEND ftp://ftp.ethz.ch/rec.scouting/ SEND ftp://ftp.ethz.ch/rec.scouting/00ls-lRfile This will tell Agora to send you a manual on how to use Agora, a directory listing of the top directory level of the scouting archives and a file (00ls-lRfile) which I build every night and contains a full directory listing of the scouting archives. As an example, to get the file 'international-events.95' from the list below, you would send a mail containing the line SEND ftp://ftp.ethz.ch/rec.scouting/faq/international-events.95 If Agora is down, try sending an E-mail containing the single word "HELP" to one of the following addresses, and follow the instructions that the server will give you in his reply: BITFTP@vm.gmd.de BITFTP@DEARN (Bitnet) ftpmail@ftp.uni-stuttgart.de
